More people are now conducting business from their holiday homes

… And why not? Picture this:

You own a beautiful villa in sunny Marbella that you usually only get to visit once or twice a year due to work and family commitments. Work is hectic, the kids are hectic… You never have time for a coffee, let alone a holiday.

And all of a sudden, a worldwide pandemic starts.

This year is completely unprecedented and will go down in the history books for a number of reasons. Number one is obviously the apparition of the novel COVID-19 virus, a respiratory disease that is highly contagious. At first we saw in the news that there had been an outbreak in China, and then before we knew it half of humanity was in lockdown for the first time ever. It’s no secret that Spain had one of the strictest lockdowns out of all the countries affected. No one could leave their homes for over 3 months other than to buy groceries, go to the pharmacy… and not much else. In May, restrictions were eased and we slowly returned to normal life, but at the time of writing cases have skyrocketed once again and no one knows what the next step will be to halt contagions.

Another reason this year will go down in history other than the economic, sanitary and just general world-wide crisis that COVID-19 caused, is because it will forever change the way we do business.

Companies that before 2020 were reluctant to ” modernize ” their approach to business have literally had no other choice this year than to learn to work via the internet if they want to stay afloat. Other workers have had no problem at all adjusting to this new way of work life as this was their day-to-day anyway before all establishments were forced to close.

Either way, 2020 has shown us that working from home is 100% possible for most businesses. Going back to the purpose of this article, due to this recent discovery people are now realizing that they can actually continue to earn money from their sofa even after the pandemic. So why not do so from your sunny villa on the Costa del Sol?

Obviously this is an option or not depending on where you live. If you need to work online from the hours of 9am to 5pm for an Australian company and want to do so from Spain, this may not be the best idea due to the time difference that will keep you up all night working. However, if you are looking to relocate here from a European or Nordic country then why not?

Not only does the Costa del Sol provide over 300 days a year of fabulous sunshine, but the lifestyle here is one of the best in the world. In fact, it has been proven that people who live in the South of Spain are happier than those in many other countries due to the combination of sunshine and the laid-back Spanish way of living.

The ” Sunshine Coast ” of Spain offers the complete package for the whole family: it is an easy and enjoyable place to set up and run a business, it offers fantastic international schools for children, and even has fun activities for all ages, from golf to water sports to amusement parks and zoos.

So, if you are already lucky enough to own a property here or are thinking of buying one, we definitely recommend relocating and working from home here.

Relocating to Spain is a fairly easy thing to do. Understandably moving to a new country can be very daunting, especially if you have a family to think about, but know that Spain is a very welcoming country and encourages foreigners to move –and invest – here.

Depending on where you are from you may or may not need a Visa. This can be the most complicated part due to the paperwork required, and for this reason we recommend you hire a lawyer to handle everything for you if you’re not quite sure how to apply. Once you are in the country, all you need to do is apply for your NIE number within three months of arriving and set up a Spanish bank account, then you’re good to go. Once again, if you’re not sure how to handle these transactions maybe I’m a good idea to hire a local to assist you.

Buying a property is also very easy as a foreigner, all you need is the above mentioned NIE, or foreigner tax identification number, and the Spanish bank account. This area of Spain has some of the most stunning properties in the world at a much lower price than other areas and countries, meaning you will get much more for your money with the world-renowned Mediterranean lifestyle thrown in too!

If you are thinking of relocating to Spain we would be happy to assist you. We have over 30 years’ experience in real estate, taxation, inheritance, company and immigration law, meaning we can help you with everything from Visa applications to buying a property all under one roof.
